We somehow ran right into the WFYI Small Studio Sessions program. Some of our favorite local musicians have played in this small studio, so it was a pretty special wrong turn for us. Thanks to everyone at WFYI and the Sears-Roebuck Foundation for their contributions.

On the first Tuesday of each month, WFYI’s Small Studio Sessions releases a new session featuring musicians playing sets in the WFYI Small Studio. You might see bands or musicians you haven’t heard of yet or well-known artists. Small Studio features a mix of genres, with an emphasis on giving local & regional musical talent a chance to shine. Scroll through this page for every session, with both audio and video versions.

We talk about our band name, Fountain Square’s love of original music, and how lucky us four were to get randomly drawn out of a hat over a year ago and still be friends.

This month’s Small Studio Session performers are known as Unicorn Derby — a whimsical name that reflects both the music and the unusual way this band got together. They became a band by luck, after their names were litterally drawn out of a hat at an event called the Random Band Challenge.

This piece includes samples from the studio session. Afterward, WFYI’s Jill Ditmire interviewed members Joe O’Brien, Caleb Spicer, Grant McClintock and Kevin Hood about their origin and their music.

You can find the entire Small Studio Session from Unicorn Derby on our Small Studio page. And the band is looking forward to their summer shows, including halftime at Naptown Roller Derby in June.

This Friday marks the first of December, as well as yet another Frist Friday full of free concerts in Fountain Square. If you’re in the neighborhood, consider stopping by Square Cat Vinyl for the Unicorn Derby EP release party. Performing with Unicorn Derby will be The 1923, and The “Ocho”.

One interesting sidenote to this show is that every band was formed at Square Cat Vinyl’s Random Band Competition, in which participating strangers’ names were drawn from a bucket to make up each new band. The acts to play on Friday are the top three bands from the competition.

Unicorn Derby

Unicorn Derby is an alternative rock band made up of Caleb Spicer (bass), Grant McClintock (vocals, guitar), Joe O’Brien (guitar), and Kevin Hood (drums). While their name evokes rainbows and butterflies, Unicorn Derby’s sound has a little more edge to it than that. After winning the Random Band Competition, Unicorn Derby won studio time, a cash prize, and a slot at the 2017 Virginia Avenue Folk Festival. After some time in the studio, they narrowed down their list of songs to a four-track EP titled, “Explosion of Awesome”.

The guitarists Joe and Grant talk about the history of the Unicorns, how we got together and wrote magical masterpieces, and the future of the derby containing unicorns.  Kevin had jury duty and Caleb had a probation meeting.
